Helambu Trek in Nepal

This is a fairly popular trek because it is close to Kathmandu. It can be done in a week, and since it is below 3500m it can be done in the winter. The highest altitude is at 3490m. The trek makes a circle through the Sherpa Helambu that is northeast of Kathmandu.

The area is populated by the friendly and helpful Sherpa people. It does not have good views, as the Annapurna or Everest treks, but it is a good cultural experience. There are many teahouses along the route, so you do not need to bring a tent or food, but it is suggested to have a sleeping bag.

Actual Trek
Sundarijal (1350m) is the usually starting point for this trek. Frequent buses depart from Kathmandu to Sundarijal (1½ hr). You can get the ticket on the bus. A taxi is around Rs 700 from Kathmandu to Sundarijal. This trek can also be begun at Nagarkot, Kakani or Sankhu. This trek goes through Shivpuri Watershed, which has a Rs 250 entry fee.

The trek goes through Pati Bhanjyan, Khutumsang, Tharepati and then to Tarke Gyang (2450m). From Tarke Gyang you can take two different routes. You can then proceed to Taramarang and then go Pati Bhanjyan and to Sundarijal to complete the trek, which takes around seven days. This is the normal route.
At Tarke Gyang you could also go to Shermathang (2600m) a day walk away. From there you proceed to the Arniko Highway, the road between Kathmandu and Tibet.
