Narayanghat and Bharatpur

These two towns are on the Mahendra Rajmarg highway in the center of Nepal. Narayanghat and Bharatpur are two continuous towns. The main area is in Narayanghat where the bus stand is located. The airport is about 10 minutes west in Bharatpur.

Narayanghat is on the bank of the Narayani River, a little downstream from the confluence of the Kali Gandaki River and Trisuli rivers.

Where to Stay and Eat
This is not such a nice place to stay.
Gainda Cottages (20590), on the western side of the Narayani River, is a friendly, basic place with clean rooms with common bath for Rs 140/260. It has a courtyard garden. Mosquitoes can be vicious.
Regal Rest House (20755), near the bus station, has rooms with common bath for Rs 150/200 and with bath and hot water for Rs 300/400. The rooms in the front are very noisy and should be avoided. It has a decent restaurant.
Quality Guest House (20939), near the bus stand, has clean rooms with bath for 150/250. It has a restaurant. It has solar hot water.
Hotel River View (21151), near the Pokhara bus stand, is a quiet, good budget choice with a river view (from the upper floors). It is a good place to stay if going to Devghat.
Kailash Lodge (20469) is a well-managed place, with rooms with common bath for Rs 150/200 and Rs 200/250 with bath.
Pratiksha Guest House (21566), next to the Kailash Lodge, has rooms with common bath for Rs 150/200 and Rs 200/250 with bath.
Narayani Safari Hotel (20534, 20130; fax 21058; Kathmandu office: 525-015; email: info@nbe.pc.mos.com.np), is a well-managed place with pleasant grounds with A/C rooms for Rs $60/75. It has a pool, tennis courts, and a good restaurant. The often offer a 20% discount. Many people stay here while visiting Chitwan
Hotel Chitwan Keyman (20200) is a modern place with comfortable A/C rooms with TV for $40/50. They may give a 25% discount. It has a quiet garden.
Lovely River Resort (01 425-042), a few km out of town, has stone cottage for Rs 900, including meals. It has a pleasant location next to the Trisuli River.

Where to Eat
City Centre Restaurant is a good place.
Eagle Rest House has good food.
The Narayani Safari Hotel has a good really good restaurant.

Travel
There is an airport in Bharatpur from where RNAC (20326) and Everest Air (21093) have daily flight to Kathmandu and Pokhara for $50.
There is a bus stand at the north end of Narayanghat on the road to Mugling for buses going to Pokhara (5 hr, 15 daily), Devghat and Gorkha. The buses to Kathmandu (5 hr, 10 daily, mainly in the morning, Rs 75) and express buses stop just east of Pulchowk, the intersection of the Mahendra and Mugling highways. Buses to Tadi Bazaar (30 min) depart frequently from around 500m south of Pulchowk.

The booking office for Sajha Yatayat is next to the Gulf petrol station. You can book private night buses at an office with a green sign at the Gulf station. Day bus tickets can be gotten at the counter outside the Regal Rest House.

There are Sajha Yatayat buses to Nepalganj (Rs 175), Janakpur (Rs 110), Tansen (Palpa) (Rs 85), Birganj (Rs 75) and Bhairawa (Rs 60).
Private buses go to Biratnagar (9 hr, Rs 220, 7.30 pm), Janakpur (6 hr, Rs 130, 8 pm), Kakarbhitta (10 hr, Rs 275), Kathmandu (5 hr, Rs 85, many), Mahendranagar (18 hr, Rs 325, 4 pm), Nepalganj (10 hr, 7 am & 7 to 10 pm, Rs 180 day & Rs 225 night) and Pokhara (5 hr, several, Rs 86).
Minibuses depart for Tandi (Tadi) Bazaar) from the second main intersection on the Mahendra Highway after crossing the Narayani River. They take a half hour and are Rs 10. A taxi to Chitrasali (for Chitwan) is Rs 350.

Rickshaws within town should be less than Rs 15.

Narayanghat Area

Devghat
Devghat, 5km northwest of Narayanghat, is a peaceful place where the Kali Gandaki and Trisuli Rivers meet to form one of the main tributaries of the Ganges. It is a pleasant place with some temples and a large sandy beach. It was mentioned in the Skanda Purana. It also known as Deoghat and Harihara Chhetra. There is a major festival here, the Tribeni Mela, during the Nepali month of Magh (Jan/Feb).

Travel
It is a pleasant one-hour walk along the river to here from Narayanghat. The path can be a bit hard to follow. It is easier to follow the path from Devghat to Narayanghat. To get here you go north 3km on the Mugling road. Then turn left at the sign-posted dirt road, a little before the police post and go 2km. You take the right fork and go 3km.
There are frequent mini-buses between Narayanghat and Devghat.
