Hile

Hile is a town that you might come to when beginning or ending a trek.
It is possible to get trekking supplies here. It is where treks to
Arun Valley and to Makalu begin. There are some nice day walks in
the area. Hile is 15km past Dhankuta.
There are some great views of the mountains about a half-hour walk
from Hile, especially the Makalu range. To get there you walk to the
north end of the bazaar and bear left onto a dirt bath and after around
300m go up a set a steps to get to the Hattikharka trail. You then
walk pass the army base and then pass the army check point. You then
go left get to a grassy plateau from where there is a fantastic view
of the mountains.
There are many porters here. There people living here are Rais, Newar
and Bhotiyas.
Where to Stay and Eat
Hotel Gajur has clean rooms and a popular Tibetan restaurant.
Hotel Himali (20340) has rooms with common bath for Rs 80/120 and
with dorm beds for Rs 40.
Doma Lodge (20574) is a clean place with basic rooms for Rs 90 and
with dorm beds for Rs 30.
Hotel Hillstone, by the bus stand, has clean double rooms with bath
for Rs 300.
Kanjirowa Resort (20665), south of the bazaar, is a Tamang-style building
with big basic rooms with hot water for Rs 500. It has good size grounds.
Travel
There is a night bus to Kathmandu (18 hr, 1.30 pm, Rs 373) and buses
to Dharan (every half hour), from where you can get buses to other
places. The bus ride to Kathmandu is really tough, so you may want
to break the journey in Janakpur or Chitwan. There are regular buses
to Basantapur (2 hr, every hour, Rs 45)
