Money

Google

Exchange Rate
As of January 4, 2001 the exchange rate for the US$ was around Rs 46.

Changing Money
The State Bank of India is usually the place to change money, but major branches of other Indian banks may also change money. Indian banks, especially the State Bank of India, can complicate your life by making it very hard to change money. What takes 30 seconds in London can take an hour in India. US dollars are the easiest currency to convert, and the British pound is second. In many cases, especially in smaller cities, banks will not accept certain currencies, and in some cases they will only accept US dollars or British pounds. I went to a few banks that would only take American Express travelers cheques.

You get a slightly higher bank rate for travelers cheques than cash. Travelers cheques can very seldom be used as direct payment, so they usually have to be changed in banks or hotels. In many cases, only certain banks will change travelers cheques. You can buy travelers cheques in Indian rupees in India. These are more widely accepted, especially in small towns.

It is a good idea to change a good amount at one time in the bigger cities. A few times, I have spent two hours changing money in a small bank. Banks usually give a much better rate than hotels, often two rupees more. Many large hotels change money 24 hours a day. Usually it is much quicker to change money at the airport than at a bank.

A good place to change money is at the American Express or Thomas Cook offices, which usually only take five minutes. They are efficient and easy to deal with. In some places such as Goa, you can change money in travel agencies.

Most branches of the Bank of Baroda make cash advances in rupees against a Visa card.

Black Market
There used to be a black market for changing money in India, but now you usually get a better rate by changing money legally. If you change money on the street they usually only want $50 or $100 bills or large British pounds. If you do this, however, it is illegal and there is a chance you will be ripped off.

As you are changing the money, suddenly the “police are coming” and you have to put away the rupees you just received before you can count them. When you turn around everyone is gone, and later when you count your money you find out only the first few bills are real and the rest are just pieces of paper. This is more common in Mumbai than anywhere else. If you are told “hurry, give us you dollars, the police are coming” immediately put your money in your pocket and walk away.

NOTE  You are not allowed to bring rupees into India or take them out of India.

Travelers Cheques (Checks)
They are the safest way to carry your money. Besides safety, another advantage with travelers cheques is you get a slightly higher exchange rate at the bank when you exchange them for rupees. If you live in America and belong to AAA, you can purchase American Express travelers cheques with no service charge. It is not a good idea to bring all your money in travelers cheques, because cash often comes in handy. Many banks do not accept travelers cheques.

It is best to use US dollars or pound sterling travelers cheques. It is best to use the well-known brands like Visa, Citibank, Barclays, American Express, and Thomas Cook. Both American Express and Thomas Cook have several offices in India. I’ve seen that American Express and Thomas Cook cheques are usually accepted everywhere, and I personally would only bring these two, in fact, I would not even think of bringing any other brand. American Express and Thomas Cook are known to be the most efficient in replacing your cheques in case you lose them or have them stolen.

With some travelers cheques, you can only get a refund when you get home. When you purchase cheques, you should get the addresses of the refunding agents in India.

You should keep your proof of purchase receipt and cheque serial numbers. Do not throw away your receipt or leave it at home. Bring it with you and keep it separate from your cheques. If you lose your cheques, the proof-of-purchase receipt will greatly speed up the process of getting replacements. You are supposed to report loss or theft of your cheques within 24 hours to the company from which you got them. American Express’s 24-hour number in Delhi is 011-687-5050.

If you lose your cheques, you need a photocopy of the police report, your photo, proof-of-purchase receipt, and the cheque numbers. If you do not have the cheque numbers they will have to contact the place where you purchased them. So at least make sure you have that address.

American Express refunding agents are: New Delhi, A Block, Connaught Place (332-4119); Calcutta, 21 Old Court House Street (248-4464); Mumbai, Regal Cinema Building, Chatrapati Shivaji Road, Colaba (285-1820); and Chennai, G-17, Spencer Plaza, Anna Salai (852-3638).

Thomas Cook offices are: New Delhi, Hotel Imperial, Janpath (332-7135); Calcutta, 21 Old Court House St (248-8096); Mumbai, Dr Dadabhai Naoroji Rd (204-8556); Chennai, 112 Nungambakkam High Road (827-4941); Bangalore, 55 MG Rd (558-6742); and Hyderabad, Nasir Arcade, 6-1-57 Saifabad (231-988).

Credit Cards
In India, most major credit cards are accepted in big hotels, high-class restaurants, major shops, and Indian Airlines. Visa, MasterCard, and Diners Club are widely accepted. It is a good way to pay your hotel bill. The exchange rate you receive is the same as you receive with travelers cheques, slightly better than cash. A lot of people who come to India do not bring enough money with them, so a credit card can be a good source of needed cash. You can also sometimes purchase travelers cheques with a credit card. With a Visa Card, MasterCard, or Japanese Credit Bureau card you can make cash withdrawal (in rupees) at some banks.

Before departing you should write down the phone number on the back of your credit card in case you lose it, as it may be difficult to find the correct number to call while you are in India. This is especially true with a Visa Card, because when I try to get the number to call for a lost card if you are in India on their Web site, they only have toll free numbers to call in various countries.

Regrettably there is no number listed for India and also there is no number listed to call if you lose your card in India. I am researching at the present time what the number to call is and will update it onto this site.

If you lose a MasterCard credit card you should call collect to the United States at 314 542-7111 to report the lose of the card.

American Express Card Holder Access to Cash

There has been a major increase in the number of ATM machine throughout India in the last year. They are mainly located in the major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai and Calcutta. But now they can also be found in many more places including: Pune, Amritsar, Goa and Chandigarh. As far as I know and I have talked to at least ten people about it there is no ATM machine in Agra yet.

Some cities where there are ATM machines that take MasterCard and Cirrus ATM cards are: Ahmedabad, Gujarat; Amritsar, Punjab; Bangalore, Karnataka; Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh; Bhubaneswar, Orissa; Calcutta, Calcutta; Chandigarh, Punjab; Chennai, Tamil Nadu; Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu; Delhi; Ernakulam, Kerala; Faridabad; Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh; Indore, Madhya Pradesh; Jaipur, Rajasthan; Jalandhar; Kanpur, UP; Kochi, Kerala; Kottayam, Kerala; Lucknow, UP; Ludhiana; Madgaon, Goa; Mumbai, Maharashtra; Panaji, Goa; Pune, Maharashtra; Secunderabad, Andhra Pradesh; Siliguri, West Bengal; Sriganganagar; Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala; Thrissur, Kerala; Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu; Vadodara, Gujarat; Vallabvidyanagar; Vishakapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

Some cities where there are ATM machines that take Visa, Visa Election and Plus ATM cards are: Ahmedabad, Gujarat; Bangalore, Karnataka; Calcutta, West Bengal; Chennai, Tamil Nadu; Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu; Delhi; Gurgaon; Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh; Indore, Madhya Pradesh; Jallandhar; Kanpur, UP; Kochi, Kerala; Ludhiana; Mumbai, Maharashtra; Pune, Maharashtra; Secunderabad, Andhra Pradesh; Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala; and Vadodara, Gujarat.

Western Union
You can have money wired to you from your home country via Western Union. It cost $39 to wire from $300 to $3000 from the US and 25 pounds to wire up to 2000 pounds from the UK. The usual agent for Western Union is Sita Travels in various cities in India. The Western Union web site is: www.westernunion.com. The Western Union agent in Vrindavan is Gangotri in Loi Bazaar.

WARNING! Don’t let your credit card out of your sight, as duplicate forms can be made and billed to you for fictitious purchases. This is not unusual in India.

Encashment Certificates
When you change money at the bank they give you a piece of paper called an encashment certificate. It is a record of the amount of money you exchanged. To change money back to foreign currency, when you leave India, you need to turn in your encashment certificate. It is illegal to bring rupees in or out of India, and if you are searched by customs when you are leaving or entering they will take them from you.

If you want to get an extension on your visa, you have to show enough encashment certificates to prove that you legally changed enough money to have supported yourself in India. If you stay in India longer than 120 days, you need an income tax clearance. You have to show encashment certificates to get this.

If you want to purchase a railway ticket using the tourist quota with rupees, you may have to present an encashment certificate. If you use excess baggage or export something from India, you have to show an encashment certificate at least for the amount of the shipping and maybe the cost of the goods.

If you take things out of India in your check-in luggage, you do not need an encashment certificate.

How Much Money to Bring
You get a good value for your money in India. But even though things are cheap, they do add up. You may have medical expenses, or you may suddenly find out about some wonderful place that you just have to go to. You may want to stay an extra month, or you may want to purchase something you always needed and can’t do without. Also, it really can be much more expensive than you think. So, if possible, it is a good idea to bring about 50% more than you were planning to bring.

If you are constantly traveling, it will cost you about 50% more than if you just stay in one place. For about $30 a day, you can live and travel in India at close to an American standard.
If you always stay at the cheapest hotels, travel second-class on the trains, take cheap buses, and eat in simple places, you can spend less than Rs 250 (US$5) a day, or US$150 in a month.

If you stay in standard places with attached bath (like government tourist bungalows), travel A/C class on the trains, take luxury buses or auto-rickshaws instead of ordinary buses, and eat in a fancy place now and then, it will cost you about US$15 to US$25 a day, or US$450 to US$750 a month. If you travel at the highest standard, staying in the best hotels and flying everywhere, you can easily spend more than US$150 a day.

Transferring Money
Although over the last few years it has become much easier, it can still be difficult to send money to India. Never send cash by mail, as there is a high rate of theft, and the postal system is inefficient. It can take months to receive a letter from England. You should cable the money. Transferring money to India can be very time-consuming and difficult if a slight mistake is made. Make sure names are spelled correctly. Transferring money outside a big city can be difficult or not possible.

It is a good idea to deal with a foreign bank or company. Bank of America, American Express, ANZ Grindlays, Citibank, and Thomas Cook, have branches in India. If you have an American Express credit card, wiring money is very efficient. The person wiring the money has to go to any American Express office, give them the money, and tell them which branch in India to wire it to, and who will receive it. Within 24 hours the money can be picked up. The person wiring the money can also just call American Express and use their credit card to pay them. They charge about 8% to transfer money to India. Their number in the US is (800) 926-9400.

Western Union can transfer money to one of their over 20 offices in India in fifteen minutes for a fee of 9.5 percent of the amount sent. Their number in the US is (800) 325-6000. They are usually found connected to Sita Travel Agencies. Their address in Delhi is F-12 F-Block, Connaught Place (331-1122) and in Mumbai their address is 8 Atlanta Bldg, 1st Floor, Nariman Point (223-3285).

Indian banks such as the State Bank of India and Bank of Baroda can wire money from their branches in your country to large branches in India in two working days.

Money should be transferred in hard currency (your own currency or dollars) because you will usually get a better exchange rate in India than from the place from which the money is being transferred.

If you are from the US, and you need to receive money in a life-or-death situation, you can have money sent to the nearest consular office. To use this service in the US you contact the Overseas Citizens Service, American Citizens Services in Washington DC at (202) 647-5225 (mornings) or at (202) 647-4000 (other times) and ask for the OCS officer. The fee is $20 and the money can be transferred in a few hours.

Small Change
When you exchange money, it is a good idea to ask for a good amount of small bills, such as five or ten rupee notes. Many times it will be impossible to find change for a Rs 50 or Rs 100 note. You should also check the notes for large holes and even small tears, as damaged bills are not generally accepted. If your money is really damaged, you have to bring it to the bank to exchange it. When I make any decent sized purchase, I use a large bill so I can get change. Places that sell cold drinks usually have change, especially if you pay after you drink one.
