Where to Stay
and Eat - Puri
Where
to Stay
There are a few main areas where there are hotels along the beach. The
northeast part, near the fishing village, on or just off Chakra Tirtha
Rd, is where most of the budget hotels are located and is a popular
area for Western tourists. You have to be careful about swimming at
this end of the beach because there is a canal that carries raw sewerage
into the ocean.
Another
area is the main Indian tourist area, by the Puri Hotel, near Beach
Sea Rd. It is usually crowded with Indian tourists and salesmen, and
therefore not conducive for a peaceful and relaxing stay on the beach.
Five salesmen may approach you (aggressively) in the two-minute walk
from your hotel to the beach.
There
are also a few hotels in the southwest part of town. It is quiet there
and the seawater is clean. There are only occasional salesmen, but no
shortage of fisherman who use the beach as a toilet. Therefore, the
beach is not clean.
Where to Stay—Low End
Sree Chaitanya Saraswata Gaudiya Math, in the Gourbar Sahi area, has
a nice little guesthouse. It has rooms with bath for Rs 150 per night.
It is near the Birla Guest House. Recommended.
Purushottama Gaudiya Math, by Haridasa Thakura’s samadhi, has
basic rooms with common bath for Rs 40 per night. Both these places
are ashrams with a strict no-smoking rule and other restrictions as
far as no meat, alcohol, or drugs.
Where
to Stay—Chakra Tirtha Rd

the fishing village. Most Western tourists stay here.

rooms have a private bath.

for Rs 100/125. It has a pleasant garden and is located slightly back
from the main road, so it affords a bit of peace.

There is a good discount travel agent in front of the hotel. It is well-managed.
Hotel Shankar International (23637) is a good place right on the beach
with an assortment of rooms from Rs 200 to Rs 600. It has a garden and
is popular.
The well-managed Z Hotel (pronounced Zed) (22554) was once a palace.
This place has a good atmosphere and is recommended. It has rooms with
common bath for Rs 150/250 and Rs 500 for a large room with bath. It

Hotel Samudra (22705), next to the Vijoya International, is a good place
on the beach with rooms ranging from Rs 350/450 to Rs 650 with A/C.
Both of these hotels, although recommended, are close to the open sewage
canal that flows into the ocean, so it is a bad place to swim.
OTDC Panthanivas Tourist Bungalow (22562), nearby on the seashore, has
doubles for Rs 300/400 and Rs 600 with A/C. It is a decent place to
stay and each plain room has an ocean view from the balcony. The rooms
