This normal, Gujarati town was once the capital of Saurashtra and was later used as an important British government center. Mahatma Gandhi lived here for a while.

Information
The helpful Tourist Office (234-507), Jawahar Rd, behind the State Bank of Saurashtra, sells maps of Gujarat for Rs 20. Open Mon to Sat 10:30 am to 6 pm.

You can change cash and travelers cheques at the State Bank of India (226-416), Jawahar Rd, past Jubilee Gardens and the State Bank of Saurashtra (226-575), Jawahar Rd.

The GPO is west of Jawahar Rd, opposite Jubilee Gardens. Postal Code: 360001.

Wesphil Computer Centre (237-290), 2nd floor, Galaxy Building, has internet facilities (Rs 50 per hour).

Watson Museum
Located in the Jubilee Gardens, the Watson Museum has relics from the Indus Valley Civilization dating to 2000 BC. There are also excellent miniature paintings, Rajasthan brass and silver work, and tribal dioramas. There is a statue of Queen Victoria surrounded by portraits of Gujarati rulers. Open daily except Wed 9 am to 12:30 pm and 2:30 to 6 pm. Closed 2nd and 4th Sat of the month.

Kaba Gandhi no Dela
This is the residence of the Gandhi family after they moved here in 1881. There is a small collection of personal items and photographs. Open Mon to Sat 9 am to noon and 3 to 6 pm.

Where to Stay—Lower
Milan Guest House (235-878), behind the bus stand, has singles for Rs 125 and a double with bath for Rs 175.
Evergreen Guest House (227-052), off Dhebar Rd, a couple minutes from the bus stand, has small rooms with bath for Rs 225. It is a good place.
Jyoti Guest House (225-271), near the bus stand, has rooms with bath for Rs 175.
Himalaya Guest House (222-880), Lakhajiraj Rd, has good-sized, basic, clean rooms with bath for Rs 125/200. Often full.
Hotel Yash (227-052), Dhebar Rd, near the Bus Stand, has clean, pleasant rooms with bath and TV for Rs 175/250 and Rs 350/450 with A/C.
Where to Stay—Middle
Hotel Tulsi (231-731; fax 231-735), near the bus stand, has clean, comfortable rooms for Rs 350/450 and Rs 450/650 with A/C. It has a very good restaurant.
Hotel Samrat International (222-269, fax 322-724), near the bus stand, has modern, large, clean rooms with TV for Rs 350/500 and A/C rooms for 550/750. It has a good restaurant.
Galaxy Hotel (222-904, fax 227-053), Jawahar Rd, near Sanganwa Chowk, is a modern place with large, clean rooms. Rooms range from Rs 450/550 to Rs 450/700 depending on the size. A/C rooms are Rs 650/1000 to Rs 950/1450; suites Rs 1450 to 1800. Money changing facilities. It is the best place in town. Recommended.
Kavrey (239-331; fax 23421), Kanak Rd, is a higher class business hotel with comfortable rooms for Rs 850/1200.

Where to Eat
Most places here serve only Gujarati thalis. Babha, Panchnath Rd, has good Gujarati thalis.
Samarkand (22269), in the Hotel Samrat, is a good A/C place. It serves Indian, Chinese, and Continental food. Most dishes are under Rs 35. Open 11:30 am to 3 pm & 7 to 11 pm.
Rainbow Restaurant (23354), Lakhajiraj Rd, on the ground floor of the Himalaya Guest House, is a good, cheap vegetarian place serving South Indian food and ice cream. Very popular.
Havmoor, Jawahar Rd, near the Galaxy Hotel, is a good A/C place with Punjabi, Western, and Chinese foods.
Kanchan, in the Tulsi Hotel, is good but expensive.

Travel
Air The Rajkot Airport (227-916; fax 233-329; Airport: 453-307) is 4km northwest of town. Rickshaws charge about Rs 25 to take you there. The Indian Airlines office (227-916), Dharbar Rd, (daily 10 am to 1 pm and 2 to 5 pm). There are two flights daily to Mumbai ($80). Gujarat Airways (222-866); Jet Airways (445-912).

Train There are trains to Ahmedabad (5½ hr), Porbandar, Junagadh, Mumbai, Veraval, Jamnagar, and Bhavnagar. The Reservation Office is open Mon to Sat 8 am to 8 pm, Sun 8 am to 2 pm.

Bus There are regular buses to Ahmedabad, Porbandar, Jamnagar (2 hr), Bhavnagar, Veraval (5 hr) via Junagadh almost every hour between 6 am and 9 pm. There are private bus companies near the bus stand which run buses to places in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Mumbai. Shiv Shakti Travel (70091) is an established place.
